11 opmerkingen:

  1. What an amazing find! I am very excited to hear this. Is this the same ensemble as the Berlin Instrumental Kollegium that Fritz Stein led?

This must be the week of Die Kunst der Fuge, it will be fun to listen to while I await earthquake aftershocks here in my New York highrise.

  2. Thanks for your enthousiastic reactions! That's a frightening experience I think, an earthquake... (especially for 78rpm collectors...) - I hope there's not much damage.
I suppose Stein had a different Kollegium, there were more Kollegiums connected to different schools/universities.

  3. Yes, thank you from me too - I have a copy of this set but have not been able to transfer it (no time, equipment not set up...), so I'm very grateful to be able to hear it, thanks to your tremendous patience and generosity.

It has been transferred to CD in Japan, on a label called Shellman which I recently stumbled across:

From the samples, I was able to hear somewhere, it doesn't sound as good as your transfer!

  4. Hello, it's strange, I just left a comment but it disappeared (makes me even grumpier)... Anyway, here goes again: yes, a *big* thank you from me too, especially as I have this set myself (without the nice album) but no opportunity to hear it (equipment not set up, no time!). It's a lovely performance, I think - I've listened to about half so far. I discovered the other day that it has been issued on CD by a small Japanese label, Shellman (they mainly sell vintage watches!):

Now I must hear the Bühlig version!

    Best wishes, as ever,

    Nick

  5. I had myself just posted an Art of the Fugue a couple of days ago - by Josef and Grete Dichler - when yours soon went up. I am learning a lot about it as a result! Thanks.

  6. Hello again, I'm ashamed to say that I've only now listened to your transfer the whole way through. I have been obsessed with the Art of Fugue recently and have compared lots of versions... and Diener's can hold its head up proudly!

I've worked out the contents of the 20 sides:

    1 Contrapunctus I a 4
    2 Contrapunctus II a 4
    3 Contrapunctus III a 4
    4 Contrapunctus IV a 4
    5 Contrapunctus XII a 4, rectus & inversus
    6 Canone all' ottava
7 Canone alla duodecima, in contrapunto alla quinta
8 Canone alla decima, in contrapunto alla terza
9 Canon per augmentationem in motu contrario
10 Contrapunctus XIII a 3, inversus & rectus (NB note the order!)
    11 Contrapunctus V a 4
12 Contrapunctus VI a 4, in stilo francese
    13 Contrapunctus VII a 4
    14 Contrapunctus IX a 4
    15 Contrapunctus X a 4
    16 Contrapunctus VIII a 3
    17 Contrapunctus XI a 4
    18 ditto (contd.)
    19 Contrapunctus XIV a 4 (incomplete)
    20 ditto (contd.)

I hope you won't mind if I point out three small mishaps in your labour of love. There is an unedited restart: on side 10, at 33:09 total time, your dub stops and after 5 seconds of silence starts again, some way back in the music, I imagine because the signal had got very distorted (there's similar distortion in another long side, 4). The joins between sides 17 & 18 [@ c.58:11] and 19 & 20 [@ c.65:33] have been left unedited; the first of those (in Contrapunctus XI) matters musically more than the second, but it's not at all an easy edit!

Thank you again, this is very precious! Best wishes, Nick

  7. Good evening,
the comments here let the recording seem very interesting - unfortunately I can't find it anywhere else, and the link is down. Could you please re-upload this? Thank you very much.

  8. Hello,
yes, I enjoy it! More vital than the Roth Quartet recording, of course without that dark charm...
